Hi I'm Emerson Tan, A Budding Game Designer and Programmer.
My Works
Unity 3D - Level Design(3D Papermap)
A first-person level prototype created in Unity 3D as a study of spatial tension, ambiguity, and repetition, inspired by the indie game Station 8. The level guides players through a looping corridor environment, where subtle changes in layout, lighting, and props create a sense of unease and mystery. Designed entirely from a paper layout, then built using Unity’s ProBuilder for rapid iteration and a Template given for this gradable assignment.
Working on this project taught me how to design for psychological engagement more than mechanical challenge. By studying Station 8, I realized that tension doesn’t always come from enemies or hazards — it can come from subtle environmental changes, player expectations, and layout repetition.
I learned how to:
- Use symmetry, lighting, and spatial pacing to make players feel watched or uneasy
- Guide players subtly without explicit objectives, using visual storytelling
- Embrace restraint — leaving things unsaid or unseen can be more powerful than traditional gameplay
- Work from a paper map to 3D prototype, adapting 2D flow into believable, explorable space
- Appreciate iteration — small tweaks in wall placement or lighting intensity dramatically altered how the space felt
- Ultimately, this project shifted how I think about level design. Instead of just asking “Is this fun?”, I started asking “What does the player feel?” — and how the environment alone can evoke curiosity, discomfort, or anticipation.
Adobe Photoshop - Designing Props
During my time in PhotoPlay, i was tasked to design several prop designs for Photobooth Events. This task has helped me explore how typography and shape language can convey tone and attitude in a visual format. The asset was designed from scratch using a combination of Photoshop’s brush tools, shape manipulation, layer effects and designs from Freepik and Font text websites for inspiration. The focus was on creating a highly readable yet artistically expressive graphic, suitable for use in casual, mobile, or youth-oriented digital environments.
I learned to:
- Balance style with clarity, especially when working with hand-drawn type vectors
- Work with layer structures to keep assets modular for future animation or export
- Use Photoshop’s brush, layer effects, and transform tools efficiently
Adobe Lightroom - Tengah Community Centre Event (2025)
For this is Event, i worked with a fellow full-time colleague and learned to shadow, essentially to watch and learn and then follow suit to take photos at Tengah Community Club,. I also learn the ropes to photography event where we would met the client and then they will communicate to us what kind of shot and what kind of feel they want before we start .
This photograph was taken during a community event at Tengah Community Club. I aimed to capture the warmth and intimacy of a family in a candid, genuine moment. Rather than relying on formal poses, I positioned myself to observe from a natural angle — letting the family interact organically and waiting for a moment of connection.
I framed the shot to emphasize closeness and emotion, using soft ambient lighting from the venue to naturally highlight the subjects without harsh shadows.
Post-production was done in Adobe Lightroom Classic to bring out the emotional tone while keeping a natural finish:
- Balanced exposure and white balance for accurate and pleasing skin tones
- Enhanced contrast and vibrancy to give the image depth and warmth
- Applied gentle color grading with warm undertones to evoke a homely, comforting mood
